Dorjee was born to a nomad family in Amdo, Tibet, and enrolled at a Buddhist monastery at age 6. He grew up cooking in the monastery, and eventually left Tibet in search of more opportunities, crossing the Himalayas on foot and registering as a refugee in Nepal. He moved to India and worked as a baker in a cafe, and was well known for his beautiful folk singing. In 2013 Dorjee married an American who had been working in the Tibetan community in India for several years. He immigrated to the United States and they welcomed a son in 2015.
In 2016, Dorjee Momo began private home dinners and in 2017 opened a beloved pop-up restaurant and bar in Washington DC. Momos are juicy Tibetan-style dumplings, traditionally handmade with yak or lamb meat. The business grew rapidly thanks to our badass team and incredibly loyal and devoted guests! The pace eventually exceeded what was sustainable - it was a tough decision but we closed and reconfigured everything. In 2024 Dorjee moved to upstate New York to be closer to family.
Now we are older and wiser, reviving our culinary project with a renewed passion for cooking and a deeper understanding of how to operate smoothly while maintaining our health and sanity! In this reincarnation of Dorjee Momo we offer full-service catering for all types of events, in a wide range of formats, as well as consistent weekly bar menu service at Tubby’s.
